GENERAL INFORMATION

American Model Trains/Auburn Model Trains/AMT Trains produced a highly detailed fleet of modern streamlined passenger cars years before Lionel. In addition, they produced eight different types of cars in seven road names. The first cars were a limited set of three sand cast cars in 1948, but by 1950, production was changed to extruded aluminum with the eight different types of cars in both AT&SF and NYC liveries. Initial production had polished smooth roofs and plastic non-operating couplers. The couplers were soon replaced with “Lift-a-Matic” couplers which were metal and could be opened by a simulated lift pin. They were also compatible with Lionel couplers. These cars were later joined by a “companion” series with fluted roofs. The catalogue numbers for the cars was consistent across the seven railroads. The cars were later produced by Kusan Model Trains/KMT with no significant changes.
Catalog car numbers had four digits with the first digit identifying the railroad, and the last three the car type. They were assigned as follows:

X007 Combination Coach-Baggage Car
X008 Baggage Car


The lead number identifying the railroad was 1 for MKT (Texas Special), 2 for AT&SF, 3 for NYC, 4 for PRR, 5 for Southern, 6 for C&NW, 7 for B&O. All cars with names, such as roomettes and observation cars, were based on actual names. Some railroads were available with a second, or even a third roomette, making longer trains possible. In these cases, the additional roomettes had a different prototypical name such as City of Erie and City of Utica for the NYC set. Drumheads on the observation cars were prototypical and illuminated.
Beginning in 1952, AMT and later KMT, also offered extruded aluminum streamlined passenger cars similar to, but in some cases not exactly the same as, the O gauge equipment. There were only six of these. Neither the mail express car nor the vista-dome were produced. Otherwise the numbering system was the same, with a prefix H-, so for instance, the dining car is H-03. They were offered both lettered for the AT&SF or as kits with aluminum strips which could be lettered and glued on. Like the bigger cars, the early ones had plastic couplers and the later ones scaled down Lift-a-Matics.
